Should You Buy the 2023 Ford Maverick Over the 2023 Ford Ranger?

Both the Maverick and Ranger are excellent workhorses. Both pickups offer stout and fuel-efficient engine options, nice handling, and plenty of features. However, these two pickups are in different segments and serve different types of drivers. Let’s put them side by side and see how the new Maverick stands up against its bigger Ranger sibling.

2023 Maverick vs 2023 Ranger Base Models

All 2023 Maverick models come with a standard 2.5L hybrid powertrain that produces a net 191 hp and 155 lb-ft of torque in front-wheel drive paired to a continuously variable automatic transmission. This setup makes for a smooth and frugal ride.

A new addition to the Maverick’s engine lineup is a punchier 2.0L four-cylinder turbocharged engine that churns out an impressive 250 hp and 277 lb-ft of torque connected to an eight-speed automatic transmission with an optional AWD drive system for this powertrain.

On the other hand, the 2023 Ranger is powered by a more robust 2.3L EcoBoost® engine that churns out a solid 270 hp and 310 lb.-ft of torque. The engine pairs with a standard 10-speed automatic transmission in a rear-wheel drive system.

You can haul heavier equipment with the Ford Ranger with its massive towing capacity of up to 7,500 lbs compared to the 4,000 lbs towing capacity of the Maverick’s 2.0L EcoBoost engine in AWD with Towing Package.

However, here’s where the new Maverick has the upside over the 2023 Ranger. The 2.0L turbocharged engine AWD gets an EPA rating of 25 mpg combined, 23 in the city, and 30 on the highway. That beats the Ranger’s EPA rating of 23 mpg in the city, 26 on the highway, and 21 combined.

But the real deal breaker is the hybrid powertrain. The hybrid Maverick returns an impressive 37 mpg combined, 42 in the city, and 33 on the highway, easily crushing the Ranger and most non-hybrid compact sedans on the market!

The Ranger may get a new hybrid powertrain soon, but we’ll still have to wait for it. For now, the Maverick still delivers better fuel economy than the Ranger, especially the Hybrid version.

Which Ford Truck Should You Buy?

The answer depends on your needs and budget. The Ranger definitely packs more power and muscle than the Maverick. It’s larger, it has more capability, and the interior feels more premium than the Maverick, but it’s also more expensive.

On the other hand, the 2023 Maverick is more fuel efficient, more compact, and cheaper than the Ranger, starting only at $22,195 for the base models. If you’re looking for a practical and versatile truck for your daily commute, the  Maverick is an excellent choice. However, if the Maverick feels like it’s a little short on capability and storage, you’ll be better off with the Ranger.
